Who am I looking for?
- A balanced person.
- it may sound strange, but a Saarloos picks up on absolutely everything about its people, so if you're wrestling with your own hang-ups and have big mood swings, your SWH will mirror it all straight back at you. That might mean chewed-up shoes, or toileting in the house. - A master of patience.
- a Saarloos really does need bucketloads of patience and time. It's not just a dog you can leave to grow like a tree in the forest. Socialisation is a lifelong process. And for plenty of situations you'll need to arm yourself with an enormous dose of patience. - An anti-hothead.
- you won't lose it over a chewed-up camera worth a small fortune, bitten-through cables, dug-up flowerbeds, or a car soiled with every bodily fluid imaginable. You need to keep a cool head ALWAYS and never punish the dog. As a rule it's the owner's fault anyway, for not putting their things safely away, or for handling the dog like a bull in a china shop. - A responsible person.
- a lead, collar, harness and muzzle will be your must-haves. You'll handle your dog in line with its character and with what you've taught it. If you don't, you're risking serious trouble and the dog's life. - A communicator.
- I want the owner to stay in touch with me for as long as the puppy will be alive, and to let me know about every major change in its life. I won't be chasing you every day, but I do expect you to drop me a message now and then and tell me what's going on and how you're getting on. - A Saarloos person.
- as you've probably gathered, this isn't a classic dog – they are their own selves. A similar mindset is expected from their people. Also, a SWH will always be happiest among other wolfdogs. So I'm looking for someone who won't mind meeting up with other wolfdog owners and joining a meet-up, a trip or a weekend now and then.
Now it's probably a good idea to write who we're definitely not looking for...
Who we're NOT looking for!
- A show-off.
- someone who gets a wolfdog just for the looks, to be cooler. - A flower-power show-off.
- someone who imagines having a wolf from the forest at home, living with it in perfect symbiosis while it does whatever its wolf instincts tell it. God forbid they'd want to feed the dog a vegan diet. - A reseller.
- we NEVER sell through a third party or as a gift. The whole family must always agree to getting a SWH. - A hothead.
- if you struggle with your temper and can't stay calm even when you come home to find your flat turned upside down, you're not ready for a Saarloos. - A fusspot.
- living with a Saarloos can get really messy at times. Whether it's rolling in a carcass, eating something disgusting, or fluids coming out of every possible and impossible opening.
If this hasn't put you off and you're still interested in a little wolf – get in touch.
